Debut For Milltek Sport Civic Cup at Castle Combe
This Saturday, 6th August, rounds nine and ten of the 16-round Milltek Sport Civic Cup will have its first ever visit to Castle Combe circuit.
Everyone in attendance will be treated to some of the most exhilarating racing currently on offer in the UK, especially if the past few rounds are anything to go by. A grid of 24 Civics split between two classes; 18 in the Cup Class (for modified cars) and six in the Production Class (for those that are closer to standard specification).
This will be the first ever visit to the Castle Combe for some of the drivers and, as it’s a circuit with reputation for favouring those who have experience of its demanding the 1.85-mile lap, the outcome of the two races are even harder to predict than normal.
Brief Catch Up
So far there have been three meetings and eight rounds that have taken place. With three at Cadwell Park in May, the winners being Dan Thackeray, George Alp-Williams and Morgan Bailey. Another three races at Brands Hatch in June. Where 2021 Champion Alistair Camp put his 2022 title hopes back on track with two wins from the three races, as Morgan Bailey recorded his second victory of the season in the other. Followed by a further two rounds at Oulton Park in July.
Camp was declared the winner in round seven at Oulton Park, after the race was cut-short due to a red-flag incident on lap three. Thankfully, round eight went the distance, where last year’s runner up Matt Luff fought his way to the front to record his first win of 2022.
Camp’s three wins, and his second place at Cadwell Park, sees him lead the championship ahead of Luff, who’s win in round eight added to his four other podium visits, puts him in second. Bailey is currently sitting in third who has two wins and two podiums.
Ones to watch at weekends event are local drivers and Castle Combe regulars, Owen Hillman and Simon Norris. They will be running in the two bright yellow Civics prepared by the Melksham-based Pro Alloys team.
In the Production Class, Alfie Jeakins proved nearly unstoppable at Cadwell and Brands, having scored five victories from six races. His two second place finishes at Oulton Park were still credible results. But a win in round eight paired with five second place and two third place finishes, sees Dave Marshall jointly lead the category on equal points. Loui Hounsell is currently close in third place. He’s another who is making regular visits to the podium, including wins at Brands Hatch and at Oulton Park.
